Kogut Northeastern Nursery Stock
In case you didn't know, Kogut has about 300 acres of field
grown stock in addition to 125 acres of container production. As far as quality
and variety goes, the nursery is looking the best it ever has. Let's start with
the field production: Where Kogut excels in field grown stock is in their
evergreens. For spring 2006 they have limited sizes
available in items like Pinus strobus, Picea abies, Picea omorika, Picea glauca
Densata, and Picea pungens but the material is very nice. Most are limited to
4/5' except for Picea abies which are available up to 5/6' and Pinus strobus
which are available up to 7'. However, the 4/5' that are available are very
nice. See the photos below to get a visual of the quality available. As for
other evergreens, they have monster Thuja available: nice Emerald Green and Dark
American arbs are available in sizes up to 8/9'. Techny arbs are available up to
6/7'. Again, see the photos below to get an idea of quality. They also have a
nice crop of crabapples available with many varieties available as well as some
nice maples and birch.
There's a lot of great container stock available as well. They have a great
azalea crop coming on available in 2G and 5G. Worth noting is that Karen azaleas
are back in full force (available in 2G and 5G) after a brief absence. There are
some 1G azaleas available too for any growers who are interested as 1G azaleas
seem to be short on the market. They will also select out 1G budded plants if
you're customer requests so for retail. Speaking of 1G, Kogut has a gorgeous
crop of 1G Sungold Cypress available. They have about 2000-3000 of those to
sell. They also have some 1G Boulevard Cypress to move too if you have a grower
in mind.
If you haven't noticed yet or haven't looked at the new catalog yet they have
added several Proven Winners to their container product line. All Proven Winners
in the catalog have the little PW symbol listed to the left so you and your
customers can easily identify them. Be aware that some of the Proven Winners are
in short supply for the spring but rest assured that more are coming on. The
Wine & Roses Weigela are looking great.
But it's not all about the Proven Winners as Kogut has a lot of great material
to sell. They have a nice crop of Ilex Blue Princess and Blue Maid to pick from
with 2G being a good value. The 2G Sungold Cypress look great. Their Sungold
Cypress is about as good a color as you're going to find. The 2G Leucothoe
axillaris crop looks awesome with the Girards Rainbow 2G being a little smaller
but they are nice too. A nice crop of junipers is ready for spring sales too:
Wiltonii, Sargent Blue, Bar Harbor, Daubs Frosted, Blue Pacific, etc, etc.
They're looking really good and should act as nice order starters. They have a
nice 3G Emerald Green crop with lots available so don't fear that you'll wind up
with whimpy plants. Gorgeous 2G Pieris Cavatine and some nice Mountain Fire
among others are ready for sale too. Again, see the photos below. There are lots
of other great container shrubs available including Physocarpus Diabolo,
Hibiscus, Syringa, Hydrangea, Spiraea, other Ilex, etc.
The container tree program seems to be a winner as well. Kogut is doing a great
job on items like maples, weeping pussy willows, weeping cherries, and
crabapples as well. Any garden center interested in fruit trees should be
getting some of Kogut's as they have nice, full fruit trees that are aching to
have a home.
As far as spring orders go, Kogut is willing to get out our orders as early as
our customers would like them. If you want your orders in early March or late
February they will pull your orders provided you have other accounts to fill out
loads with. So don't shy away from the early orders. As a reference about
1800-2000 2G/3G containers will fill up a truck. Remember, B&B and containers go
separate for the most part with few exceptions.
