Donahue's Clematis Specialists, Faribault, MN

Company History

Donahue's Greenhouse is a family owned and operated business that specializes in clematis liners and finished plants.  Dick and Lois Donahue purchased the Lehman Gardens in 1972 and specialized first in Mums and then found a niche for the quality clematis they were producing in the mid 1980’s.  Currently 7 Donahue children (2nd generation), a son-in-law and one grandson (3rd generation)  work full time in the greenhouse operation.  Donahues also runs a seasonal retail garden center that allows the business to stay on top of new retail trends.

Key Product Lines and Sizes Produced

Donahues offer 2.5” and 3.5” clematis liners that are shipped throughout the US and Canada January through October.  This size plants it great to finish your own crop for your retail store.    Donahues also grows finished #1 pots of clematis that are potted and growing in a ‘violet’ colored pot with a lock on trellis and large jumbo label.  Plants are available for shipping mid-March through September.  Bring these quality plants in and sell immediately.  Donahues lists over 130 varieties of clematis – order early for best availability. 

Donahues also offers 2” plugs of Draceana Spikes, Asparagus Sprengeri Fern and Variegated Vinca Vine.

2.5” and 3.5” clematis liners are available January through October.  Finished #1 pots are available mid March through September.  Plugs of Draceana, Sprengeri and Vinca Vine are available January through June and September through December.

Donahues does not ship dormant clematis, rather all plants are shipped live and growing to assure you of a successful crop.  These are some of the most heavily rooted plants on the market.  Growing instructions are provided with all shipments and our growers are available for any cultural or variety questions you may have.

Emerald Coast Growers began as fewer than 10,000 square feet of greenhouse in 1991 and now have ballooned up to about half a million square feet in 2016, with 30-plus acres of field crops for grass divisions.

Company History

Faribault Growers has been in business for over 20 years and their growers have over 40 years of experience.

Faribault Growers carry an extensive line of rooted succulents in single variety strips of 25.  Also popular is the 50 cell size tray of assorted succulents which gives customers 5 plants of 10 different varieties per tray. Faribault Growers, Inc. is also home to the iconic “Mums From Minnesota” chrysanthemums.

Product Availability Dates

The shipping season for spikes, sprengeri, vinca & succulents begins on February 1 and continues thru mid-April. Chrysanthemum shipping continues until July 1st.

Distinctive Qualities

Many of the mum varieties carried date back to the 1940’s and are reminiscent of a grandmother’s garden mums with many unusual shapes and colors not often seen on store shelves.  Faribault also carries all of the varieties developed by the University of Minnesota.

Company History

Ken and Marie Fessler built their first greenhouse in 1960 beginning with azalea liners and fuchsias. The company continues to thrive as a family owned and operated business, maintained by three of Ken and Marie’s children. They provide exceptional service and products to customers, and offer a wide variety of fuchsias, spring annuals, baskets, poinsettias and tropical foliage houseplants. This once tiny nursery now provides wholesale and retail services, with approximately 550,000 square feet of greenhouse.

Company History

In the fall of 1979, Greenheart Farms, Inc. was established by Henry & Connie Katzenstein and Hoy Buell. Leo & Sylvia Wolf and David & Harriet Zeitlin soon joined as greenhouse partners to start the new company and produced only four vegetables: cauliflower, celery, tomatoes, and peppers.

Company History

Gro-N-Sell began in 1969 as a lawn maintenance business that later developed into a landscaping business. Today Gro-N-Sell is known industry-wide as a grower of high-quality "plug" starter plants. Company History

Jan and Jim Gulley started growing native Colorado perennials in their backyard in old-town Fort Collins for local gardeners. In 1980 they moved to their current location and have expanded the business to include three divisions (young plants, finished wholesale and a retail garden center) with facilities covering over 9 acres.

Gulley Greenhouse specializes in custom grown plugs and liners of hardy perennials, herbs, and specialty tropical annuals (such as Cordyline, Alstroemeria and Bananas).
